What is painted

The shield has the classic pointed heater shape, but instead of metal it is built from soft, bleeding patches of watercolor: moss and sage green in the upper left and lower left, rust terracotta in the upper right, pale sand and apricot through the middle, and a dusty slate blue lower right. The patches meet in wavering edges, like fields seen from above. In the pale center stands a slim cross in deep brown.

Below the shield, in a relaxed brown script, is written “Put on the whole armour of God”, with Ephesians 6:11 beneath. The KJV spelling is kept exactly as printed. The rest of the page is warm cream paper, which gives the design a modern, minimal feel.

The armor of God in Ephesians 6

Paul closes his Letter to the Ephesians with a picture of a soldier getting dressed. The full verse reads: “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The next verse explains that the real struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual powers. Paul was writing as a prisoner, calling himself “an ambassador in bonds” (Ephesians 6:20), and Roman soldiers would have been a familiar sight.

He then lists each piece: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. All but the sword are for protection. The shield, he says, is how “ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:16).

The key word in verse 11 is “stand.” Paul uses it several times in a few lines. The goal is not conquest but holding firm, and the cross at the center of this shield shows where that strength comes from.
