About this print
Golden Harvest Field
The work of the day is almost done: sheaves stand tied in the stubble, and the last reaper walks home into the sunset.
What is painted
In the foreground, a large sheaf of wheat bound with twine stands so close that you can count the heads of grain. Other bundles are scattered across the field behind it, each catching the low orange light. A dusty path curls from the bottom right toward the middle distance, where a small figure in a hat walks away with a tool over his shoulder.
On the left, a gnarled olive tree with silver-green leaves rises above a dry-stone wall. Beyond it, rows of cypresses and rounded hills lead to a stretch of water shining under the sun, and the clouds are lit in rose and gold with rays spreading across the sky.
The thick, impressionist oil brushwork fills the frame from edge to edge. The scene carries no words or verse.
Fields ready for harvest
Jesus often spoke in the language of farming. Sitting by a well in Samaria, he told his disciples, “Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest” (John 4:35). He was speaking of the people coming out from the town to meet him, ready to hear and believe.
In Matthew 9:37, moved with compassion for the crowds, he says that the harvest is plentiful while the workers are few, and asks his followers to pray for more. Ripe grain cannot wait long in the field, and the lone reaper on the path fits that picture well: a great field, and one person walking into it at the end of the day.
Autumn decor and Thanksgiving
This is a natural piece for the fall months, from the first cool evenings of September through Thanksgiving on November 26. Its golds and ambers sit easily over a farmhouse sofa, in a kitchen, or in an entry with pumpkins and dried wheat. It also speaks to farmers, gardeners, church planters, missionaries, and anyone in ministry who thinks of their work as a harvest.
We print it as a giclée on heavyweight archival matte paper, on demand in the US, with free shipping inside the United States. It is delivered without a frame. Sizes range from 5x7 to 24x36 inches, and metric and A sizes are also available, as is a digital download.
