What is painted

He maketh me to lie down

The title comes from Psalm 23:2, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” In the dry hill country of Judea, green grass was not a given. A good shepherd had to know where it could be found and lead the flock there, often walking a long way to do it.

The psalm is attributed to David, who had kept his father's sheep before he became king. He knew that sheep do not lie down easily: they rest only when they are fed, safe and untroubled. That is why the verse says the shepherd “maketh” them lie down. Peace is something he provides, not something the sheep achieve.

In John 10, Jesus takes up the same language, promising that his sheep will go in and out and find pasture.
