What is painted

The valley runs back between gentle wooded slopes to a pointed blue mountain wrapped in haze, with a few cypresses near the horizon. Green pastures and still waters

The title comes from Psalm 23:2, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” In the hills of Judea, grass and water were never a given. A shepherd had to know where to find them, and a sheep that could lie down in a green place, with water nearby, was a sheep that was cared for.

The lamb here is alone, but nothing about it is anxious. That is the point of the psalm: the shepherd is not in the frame, yet everything the lamb needs has been provided. Jesus says in John 10:9 that his sheep shall go in and out, and find pasture.
