What is painted

A willow leans over the bank of a small stream, its long branches trailing almost to the water. In its shade two sheep lie in the grass, settled and still, one with its head lowered, the other looking out over the meadow. The water beside them is smooth and clear, with only a few reflections of the leaves.

Everything is soft: green grass and foliage, beige wool, a light mist over the far side of the stream. This painting is the final panel of a Green Pastures series, where the earlier scenes show the flock on the move; here the journey has ended in rest. There is no text on the print.

Green pastures and still waters

The scene takes its name from Psalm 23:2, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” In a dry land, grass and quiet water are not a given. A shepherd has to find them and lead the flock there, and sheep will not lie down unless they feel safe.

That is what this last panel shows: not a dramatic rescue, but the result of a shepherd's care. The sheep are fed, near water, sheltered by a tree, and at peace. Psalm 23 continues, “He restoreth my soul”, and many readers feel the whole psalm gathered in an image like this one.

Willows grow where there is water, so the tree itself is a sign that the stream will not run dry. Two sheep rather than one also matters: the psalm is spoken by a single voice, but the flock is never alone, and the painting lets the rest be shared.

The painting brings calm to a bedroom, a reading nook or a living room, and it works beautifully alongside the other panels of the Green Pastures set or on its own. Its soft greens suit a farmhouse or cottage style, and the gentle greens sit easily against white, cream or sage walls.
