What is painted

The lamb is barely a few days old, wool in soft cream curls, legs folded beneath it, eyes closed and cheeks faintly pink, resting on a plump white cloud. There is no sky painted behind it, just warm ivory paper. Around the cloud, a handful of five-pointed stars in soft gold are scattered at different sizes, the way a night sky looks to a child.

Above the picture, the verse is set in simple, friendly lettering: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee”, followed by Jeremiah 1:5. The palette of cream, white and pale gold is neutral enough for a boy, a girl, or a room not yet decorated when the print arrives.

A prophet called before birth

The line opens the book of Jeremiah. It is the moment God first speaks to him, a young man from a priestly family in Anathoth, and the full verse goes on: “and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” God is telling Jeremiah that his calling did not start when he became old enough to accept it; it started before his body was even formed.

Jeremiah's first answer is an objection. “Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child” (Jeremiah 1:6). God's reply is not to argue about his age but to promise his presence and to touch his mouth. The whole scene is about being known and chosen before you have anything to offer.

Christian families read the first half of the verse as a word over every child: this little one was seen and known by God before the first ultrasound, before the first heartbeat. Psalm 139 says something close, in the line about being fearfully and wonderfully made.
