About this print

Jesus and the Lamb

The lost sheep has been found, and the shepherd carries it home on his shoulders with a smile.

What is painted

Jesus walks toward us over a rocky slope dotted with daisies and small yellow flowers. A white lamb rests across his shoulders, and he holds its front and back legs together against his chest with both hands. The lamb looks out calmly, and Jesus glances sideways with an easy, warm smile. He wears an off-white tunic, a red woven sash and a rough brown cloak.

Behind him, gnarled olive trees stand on the hill, and morning fog lies in a wide valley where a lake mirrors the rising sun. Cypresses and distant ridges fade into pink and gold clouds. The scene fills the page completely in an impressionist oil painting style, and the print carries no text.

The parable of the lost sheep

In Luke 15:3-7, Jesus answers critics who grumble that he eats with sinners. He asks which man with a hundred sheep would not leave the ninety and nine to search for the one that is lost. The detail painted here comes from verse 5: “And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.”

The shepherd then calls his friends and neighbors to celebrate with him, and Jesus explains that heaven rejoices more over one sinner who repents than over ninety and nine who need no repentance. In John 10:11 he names himself the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep, and Psalm 23 had already spoken of the Lord as a shepherd centuries before.

For a nursery, a baptism or a pastor

A lamb carried close is an image that speaks to children, so the print is a natural choice for a nursery, a baby dedication or a first communion. It also belongs in a home where someone has come back to faith, or in a pastor's study as a reminder of the calling to care for the flock.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month in the United States, and a shepherd carrying a lamb is a fitting way to thank the person who has looked after your congregation. Larger sizes suit a church office or fellowship hall, while 8x10 fits a desk or shelf.

Your copy is a giclée print on heavy archival matte paper, made to order in the United States and shipped free to US addresses. It arrives unframed. Sizes go from 5x7 to 24x36 inches, with metric and A options as well, and a digital file is available for printing at home.
