What is painted

The last chapter of John takes place after the resurrection, by the Sea of Tiberias. Some of the disciples have gone fishing and caught nothing all night; at dawn Jesus stands on the shore, tells them where to cast the net, and then shares a breakfast of fish and bread with them over a fire of coals.

After the meal he turns to Simon Peter and asks him three times, “lovest thou me?” Each time Peter says yes, and each time Jesus gives him a task: feed my lambs, feed my sheep, feed my sheep. John notes that Peter was grieved because he was asked a third time. Many readers see a quiet restoration in this: Peter had denied Jesus three times by another fire of coals on the night of the arrest.

So the command is not only about leadership. It is forgiveness turned into a mission, and the painting shows what the mission looks like: patient, kneeling, feeding one at a time.
