What is painted

Two strong, weathered hands pull a round crusty loaf apart over a rough linen cloth, and crumbs scatter on the table. The sleeves of a cream robe are all we see of the man. To the right stands a plain earthen cup, and in front of it a small clay lamp with a single flame. An olive sprig lies across the cloth.

The scene is painted in warm browns, honey and cream, with soft, oil-like strokes that fade out into ragged edges on the white page. John 6 opens with the feeding of the five thousand, five barley loaves and two small fishes shared on a hillside by the Sea of Galilee. The next day the crowd finds Jesus again, and he tells them to labor not for the meat which perisheth. They bring up the manna their ancestors ate in the wilderness, bread from heaven. Jesus answers that he himself is the true bread, and says in verse 35: “I am the bread of life.”

Verse 51 pushes the claim as far as it will go. The full sentence continues: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. John notes in verse 59 that he said these things in the synagogue at Capernaum, and that many who heard him found it a hard saying.

For Catholic and Orthodox Christians this chapter is a foundation of the teaching on the Eucharist, the real presence of Christ in the bread. Other churches read it as a promise received by faith. Either way, it is the text behind the table.
