What is painted

On a hilltop path stands a small stone shelter with an arched opening, its walls half covered by a leafy olive branch that arches over the roof. Inside the dim alcove, a plain wooden cross leans against the back wall. On the threshold, just in front of it, a white lamb has folded its legs and lies resting.

To the right the hill drops away to a still lake wrapped in morning mist, a few cypresses and trees on its shore, and mountains fading into a pale sky. The painting is soft and luminous, in olive, cream, honey and lilac gray, with irregular brushed edges that leave a wide border of paper. It carries no text.

The lamb and the fold

A sheepfold in Bible times was often a low enclosure of stones, sometimes built against a cave or a hillside, where the flock spent the night. In John 10, Jesus speaks of himself as the shepherd whose sheep hear his voice and follow him, and he says there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

The cross inside the shelter adds a second layer. John the Baptist introduced Jesus as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” So the lamb resting at the foot of the cross can be read both ways: the believer who has found shelter, and the Lamb who gave himself so that shelter could exist.

The painting does not explain itself, which is part of its gentleness. It lets the viewer bring their own prayer to it.
