Lamb on a Pink Blanket Nursery Watercolor

What is painted

A fluffy white lamb stands on slender legs in a small patch of grass, head slightly tilted, dark eyes looking out of the picture. Its long ears stick out to the sides with a flush of pink inside. Next to it, a soft blanket in dusty rose, almost terracotta, lies bunched and folded on the ground, its fringed edge spilling over the grass.

Tiny yellow wildflowers grow around both, painted with a few quick touches. The rest of the sheet is left bare and creamy white. It is a light, loose watercolor with fine ink outlines, made to feel like an illustration from a well-loved picture book. There is no text on it.

Why a lamb

Lambs are everywhere in the Bible. In Isaiah 40, God is described as a shepherd who will feed his flock, gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom. In John's Gospel, John the Baptist sees Jesus coming and says “Behold the Lamb of God.” And after the resurrection, Jesus asks Peter to feed his lambs.

For a small child, none of that needs to be explained yet. A lamb is gentle, curious and safe, and the blanket beside it looks like one a child would drag around the house. As the child grows, the picture can become the start of a conversation about the Good Shepherd.
