What is painted

Thy rod and thy staff

Psalm 23 is written from the point of view of a sheep, and its fourth verse speaks of walking through the valley of the shadow of death without fear, because “thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” The rod protected the flock from wild animals; the staff, with its crook, guided and pulled a stray back to safety. Here the staff is resting against the tree: the danger is past, or at least watched over.

The lamb has a long history in the Bible, from the Passover lamb in Exodus to John the Baptist pointing at Jesus and saying “Behold the Lamb of God.” Isaiah 40 pictures God as a shepherd who will gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom.

The absence of a person in the picture is part of its meaning. The shepherd is not in view, yet his presence is everywhere: in the staff, in the peace of the sleeping animal.
