About this print

Sheep in the Thorns

High above the valley, the shepherd has found the one that wandered off, and he is not leaving without it.

What is painted

Jesus crouches on pale limestone at the lip of a ravine, his sandaled feet braced among wild sage and dry grass. He wears a worn cream tunic with a brown mantle and a red sash, and his dark curls fall forward as he leans in. With one hand he pulls back a tangle of thorny branches; with the other he cradles a small white lamb caught deep inside the bush. The lamb lifts its head toward him.

Behind them the land drops away into a wide canyon. A river winds through the valley floor, catching the low sun, and a hill town with cypress trees sits on the far ridge. The sky is streaked with apricot and gold. Painted in thick, textured strokes like an oil impressionist canvas, the scene covers the entire print, and there is no text on it.

The parable of the lost sheep

In Luke 15:3-7, Jesus answers critics who complain that he eats with sinners. He asks which of them, owning a hundred sheep and losing one, would not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after the lost one until he finds it.

When the shepherd finds it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing, and calls his friends and neighbors together: “Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.” Jesus then says there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine who need no repentance. Matthew 18:12-14 tells a similar version, with the sheep gone astray on the mountains.

The Gospel never mentions thorns. The painting simply imagines the moment just before the rescue, when the shepherd must reach into something sharp to bring the lamb out.

Who it speaks to

This image means a great deal to parents praying for a child who has drifted, to people in recovery, and to anyone who has felt hopelessly stuck. It is a natural choice for a nursery or a child's room, a youth ministry space, a chaplain's office or a pastor's study.

Each poster is printed on demand in the US as a giclée on thick archival matte paper, and shipping within the United States is free. Frames are not included. The painting reaches every edge of the sheet. Sizes run from 5x7 up to 24x36 inches, along with metric and A formats, and a digital download is also available.

Give it at a baptism, a homecoming, or a return to church after a long time away. The warm sunset tones work well with wood furniture, linen and earthy farmhouse rooms.
