About this print
Shepherd at Dawn
Before the town below has woken up, one man is already on the hillside, keeping an eye on every sheep in his care.
What is painted
A shepherd stands on a rocky rise, turned away from us, both hands resting on the top of a long wooden staff. He wears a cream tunic tied with a sash and a heavy brown cloak with frayed, fringed edges draped over his shoulders. His sandals are planted among tall grass, yellow wildflowers and small white daisies.
Below him the slope is dotted with sheep, some close enough to show their thick fleece, others tiny shapes grazing between olive trees. Morning mist drifts across the valley floor. A river or lake shines in the distance, and a little walled town with towers and cypresses sits on its bank. The sun is just clearing the mountains, sending rays across a sky of gold and soft blue. Rendered in the textured strokes of an impressionist oil painting, the scene covers the full print, and it carries no text.
The shepherd in Scripture
Shepherds watch over the whole Bible story. On the night Jesus was born, Luke 2:8 says, “there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” This painting shows the hour after that long watch, when daylight finally comes over the hills.
In John 10, Jesus takes the image for himself: “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” He describes a shepherd who calls his own sheep by name, walks ahead of them, and is known by them. Psalm 23 and the call to the elders in 1 Peter 5 carry the same picture of patient, daily care.
The word pastor comes from the Latin for shepherd, which is why this scene has long been tied to the work of ministry.
A thank you for your pastor
October is Pastor Appreciation Month in the United States, and this print makes a meaningful thank you from a congregation, a small group or a single family. It also suits a retiring minister, a newly ordained priest, a chaplain or a youth leader, and it looks right at home in a church office or a parsonage living room.
Every copy is a giclée print on durable archival matte paper of heavy weight, produced to order in the US and shipped at no cost within the United States. It arrives without a frame, and the painting extends all the way to the edges. Available from 5x7 to 24x36 inches, in metric and A sizes too, or as a digital file.
