What is painted

Two old walls of pale limestone, overgrown with ivy, meet at a weathered wooden gate that stands open. Through it goes Jesus, seen from behind, in a white robe with a rust-brown mantle over one shoulder and a staff in his hand. Over the other shoulder a small lamb looks back toward us. A dusty path leads on between olive trees toward a village built on a hill, with dark cypresses on its ridge.

A tall clay jar stands by the gatepost, and dry grasses crowd the foreground. The palette is warm cream, sand and olive green, with a soft, painterly texture whose borders break up into loose strokes on white. There are no words on this print, only the picture.

The shepherd and the door

The image brings together two sayings of Jesus from John 10. He calls himself the good shepherd, who knows his sheep by name and gives his life for them. In the same chapter he also says “I am the door”: whoever enters by him will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. In this painting the shepherd and the door are in the same place.

The lamb on his shoulder recalls another story, the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15. A man with a hundred sheep loses one, leaves the ninety and nine and goes after it until he finds it. When he does, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing, and calls his friends and neighbors together to celebrate.

Because Jesus faces away from us, the viewer stands where the rest of the flock would be, just outside, watching him bring one home.
