What is painted

“Suffer the little children”

Mark tells how people brought young children to Jesus so that he would touch them, and the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus was much displeased and said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God” (Mark 10:14). Then he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them and blessed them (Mark 10:16). Matthew and Luke tell the same scene.

“Suffer” here is the old English sense of “allow.” The disciples thought children were a distraction from serious work; Jesus says they are the model. He adds that whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall not enter into it.

This painting does not illustrate the moment of blessing so much as what comes after: going somewhere together, hand in hand, at a child's pace. It is a picture of trust in its simplest form.
