What is painted

Mary sits on a low bench inside a dim wooden stable, wrapped in a long cream veil and robe, bending over the baby in her arms. He is bound snugly in pale cloth. Beside her the manger is already filled with golden straw, with a length of linen laid over its edge. A small clay oil lamp burns on the bench, and a water jar stands in the shadows behind.

The painting has a warm, oil-like texture in amber, umber and honey tones, and its edges break up in rough brushstrokes that fade into the cream paper. Below it, in a flowing brown script, runs the verse: “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger.” Luke 2:7 closes the text.

The sign of the manger

Luke tells the birth of Jesus in very few words. A decree from Caesar Augustus sends Joseph up from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the city of David, with Mary, who is expecting a child. While they are there, her time comes. Verse 7 gives the birth itself in a single sentence and ends with the reason for the manger: there was no room for them in the inn.

Swaddling was ordinary care for a newborn, cloth bands wrapped close around the baby. The manger was a feeding trough for animals. Neither detail is decorative. A few verses later the angel tells the shepherds that this is exactly how they will recognize the Savior: a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. The sign of God's arrival is a poor family making do.

Luke also calls him her “firstborn”, and later in the same chapter Mary and Joseph bring him to the Temple in Jerusalem, because the Law said every firstborn male was to be called holy to the Lord.
