What is painted

Mary sits on a striped woven rug, wrapped in a cream veil and a rust brown mantle, cradling the baby against her shoulder with both arms. Beside her stands a rough wooden manger filled with straw, a white cloth hanging over its edge. A lamb lies asleep at her feet, and behind her are a clay jar and a basket with folded linen.

The room opens on one side under a wooden beam hung with vine leaves. Beyond it lie a low stone wall, olive trees, tall cypresses and a hill town in the soft gold light of evening, with mountains in the distance. The painting has the warm, grainy texture of an oil sketch in sand and umber tones, and it fades out into brushed edges. It carries no text.

“She brought forth her firstborn son”

Luke tells the birth in a single sentence: Mary “brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). The manger in the painting is that feeding trough, and the straw is where the Son of God first slept.

A few verses later, after the shepherds have come and gone, Luke adds a line about Mary alone: she “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). That is the mood of this picture. It is the quiet after the visitors, a mother holding her child and thinking over everything that has been said about him.

The lamb at her feet is a detail rather than a record. The shepherds came from the fields nearby, and Christians have long seen in the lamb a sign of who this child would be, the one John the Baptist would call “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29).
