What is painted

The stable is built of stone and rough beams, with dried herbs hanging from the rafters. The child lies in a wooden manger lined with straw and white cloth. Mary kneels on one side in a blue-gray veil, hands folded, looking down at him; Joseph sits on the other in brown, bending close. Behind them an ox and a gray donkey look over a wooden rail, and a small lamb lies in the straw at the front.

An oil lamp hangs on the wall and throws a golden light over the group, while an opening on the right shows dusk falling over hills and a village with its first lights. The painting has the soft texture of oil on paper. There is no lettering, just the scene.

What the Gospels say, and what tradition adds

Luke tells the story in a few spare lines. Joseph goes up from Nazareth to Bethlehem with Mary to be taxed, and while they are there she gives birth to her firstborn son, wraps him in swaddling clothes and lays him in a manger, “because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). The manger is the one piece of furniture the Gospel names.

The ox and the donkey are not mentioned in Luke. They came into Christian art very early, drawn from Isaiah 1:3: “The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib.” Painters and nativity sets have kept them ever since as the first creatures to recognize their Lord.

The lamb points ahead to the shepherds, who came that same night after the angel's message, and further still to John the Baptist calling Jesus “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29).
