Mary sits on a low bale of hay, loose golden straw scattered around her bare feet. A blue mantle covers her head and shoulders over a white veil and a long dusty-rose gown. She bends toward the baby with a faint smile and closed eyes, as if she has only just stopped rocking him.

Jesus is wrapped snugly in white swaddling bands, only his round face and one tiny hand showing, and he is fast asleep against her. There are no halos, no stable walls and no background: just the pair, drawn with a fine brown line and gentle washes, and the line “For unto us a child is born” with Isaiah 9:6 lettered above them.

A prophecy seven centuries before Bethlehem

Isaiah spoke these words in Jerusalem around the eighth century before Christ, when the northern lands of Israel were being overrun by Assyria. The chapter begins in gloom and then turns: “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.” The reason for that light is a birth. The full verse continues: “unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Jewish readers have understood the promised child as a righteous king in David's line. Christians from the first centuries read it as a portrait of Jesus, and it became one of the central Old Testament readings for Christmas. Many English speakers know it best through Handel's Messiah, first performed in Dublin in 1742, where the chorus lands on each of those four titles in turn.

Notice the small word “us”. The prophecy is not about a birth somewhere far away; it is addressed to the listener. Pairing it with a quiet image of Mary and her baby brings that grand promise down to the scale of one family, which is how the Nativity story itself tells it.

Christmas, a christening or a new baby

This Madonna and Child is an easy choice for Christmas, whether as a seasonal print swapped onto the mantel each December or a present for a devout mother or grandmother. Catholic families often keep a Marian image in the living room year round.

It is equally suited to a nursery, a baby shower or a baptism. The rose and blue tones are gentle for a child's room, and the verse gives parents a way to say that their own new arrival is a gift too.
