Shepherds Keeping Watch by Night, Luke 2:8 Wall Art

What is painted

An old olive tree leans over a rocky slope where sheep graze and doze in the grass. Under its branches two shepherds keep their watch, one standing with a staff, one seated on a stone. Underneath, in an elegant script, the full verse: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” Luke 2:8 follows in smaller letters.

Why shepherds heard first

In Luke's Gospel, the birth of Jesus is announced first not to priests or rulers but to working men out in the fields. Right after the manger, the camera turns to them. They are “abiding” in the field, living outdoors with their animals, and keeping watch in shifts through the night. Then an angel of the Lord stands before them, the glory of the Lord shines round about them, and they are sore afraid.

There is a history behind this choice. Bethlehem was the town of David, and David himself had been a shepherd boy in those same fields before he was anointed king. The Messiah, the son of David, is announced to men doing the job David once did.

The star in the picture is borrowed from the other Christmas story: Luke never mentions it, while Matthew tells of wise men from the east following a star to Bethlehem. Artists have joined the two scenes for centuries, and this painting does the same.
