The image of the Sacred Heart
The figure is shown from the waist up, long brown hair falling past his shoulders, eyes lowered in a quiet, almost shy expression. He wears a cream tunic under a coral mantle and a blue outer cloak, and both hands rest on his chest on either side of the heart.
The heart itself is red, bound by a small crown of thorns, with flames rising from the top and a slender gold cross above them. Pale golden rays spread out from it across his clothing. Behind him, soft washes of blue and ocher suggest light rather than a place. The words over his head read: “learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart”.
Why pair the Sacred Heart with Matthew 11:29?
It is one of the rare moments in the Gospels when Jesus speaks about his own character, and he chooses the word heart. The full verse in the King James Bible: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” It follows directly after the invitation to all who labor and are heavy laden.
A yoke was the wooden frame that joined two oxen so they could pull together. Rabbis spoke of taking on the yoke of the law. Jesus offers his own instead and describes himself not as a demanding master but as gentle and humble, the kind of teacher people are not afraid to approach.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart took its modern form in the 1670s, after the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in France. The flames stand for love, the thorns for suffering, the cross for the Passion. A familiar prayer draws straight from this verse: Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine.
In a Catholic home
Many families enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart in the main room of the house, and June is the month traditionally dedicated to it.
