What is painted

Near the bottom of the page a small cream lamb lies curled in the grass, chin resting on its front legs, eyes shut and ears tipped with pink. Around it grows a little island of green blades, pale blue five-petaled blossoms with yellow hearts, and a few tiny white flowers, all in soft watercolor washes.

Higher up, a white dove sweeps across the paper with both wings raised, a sprig of olive leaves held in its beak. Above everything, in rounded brown lettering: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee”, and Numbers 6:24 in smaller type. The rest is warm off-white paper, which keeps the picture airy and calm.

The blessing Aaron was told to speak

In Numbers 6 the LORD gives Moses words for Aaron and his sons, the priests, to say over the people of Israel. The blessing has three lines, each beginning with the name of the LORD: that he would bless and keep, that he would make his face shine and be gracious, and that he would lift up his countenance and give peace. Verse 27 adds that in this way they shall put my name upon the children of Israel.

“Keep” is the language of guarding, the way a watchman keeps a city or a shepherd keeps a flock. That is why the sleeping lamb fits so well: the first thing the blessing asks for a little one is protection while it rests. Churches and synagogues still close services with these lines, and many parents say them over a crib at night.

The dove with the olive leaf comes from another story, the end of the flood in Genesis 8, when Noah knew the waters had gone down. Put together, the two images speak of peace after danger and of a care that does not sleep.
