About this print
Madonna by Candlelight
Eyes closed, cheek pressed to his curls, a mother holds her sleeping son in a pool of warm light.
What is painted
Mary sits close to us, filling most of the picture. She wears an ivory veil that falls over her shoulders, a slate-green dress, and a mantle of amber and bronze across her lap. Her eyes are closed and her cheek rests on the head of the Child, who sleeps against her chest with curly hair, rosy cheeks and one small hand open on her collar. A soft ivory cloth wraps him, and one bare foot peeks out below her arm.
A warm golden light, like that of a candle just out of view, comes from the left and catches the edges of the veil, the curls and the folds of cloth. Everything else sinks into a dark brown background. The painting has the heavy, expressive strokes of an impressionist oil and covers the print from edge to edge. There is no text on the image.
Mary, mother of Jesus
In Luke 1:26-38, the angel Gabriel greets Mary in Nazareth and tells her she will bear a son and call his name Jesus. She answers: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38).
After the birth in Bethlehem, Luke twice describes Mary keeping and pondering what she has seen and heard. The painting shows that inner side of the story rather than an event: no visitors, no star, only a young mother holding the Son of God close while he sleeps.
The image belongs to a long tradition known as the Madonna and Child, from the Italian for my lady, which painters have returned to for centuries.
For a bedroom, a mother, a Catholic home
The dark background and glowing center make this print feel calm in a bedroom, a reading corner or a prayer space. It works as Christmas decor but is not tied to the season, so many keep it up all year as Catholic wall art.
It is a tender gift for Mother's Day, a baptism, a new mom, a woman named Mary, or a grandmother who has carried generations in her arms.
Printed on demand in the US as a giclée on thick archival matte paper, it ships free within the United States and comes without a frame. Sizes go from 5x7 to 24x36 inches, with metric and A sizes, and a digital file is available as well.
