What is painted

At the center stands a plain timber manger, rough and a little uneven, heaped with golden straw. A length of white linen has been laid over it, ready. There is no one in it yet. High above, a small star glows against a pale background, sending down a thin line of light.

No words appear on the print. The painting uses warm wood browns, straw yellow and cream, with generous empty space around the manger, so it feels hushed, like a church before the midnight Mass.

No room in the inn

Luke gives the detail in one verse: Mary “brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). A manger is a trough where animals eat. The Son of God was first laid where the livestock were fed.

The angel later gives the shepherds this as their sign: they will find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. The star over the scene comes from Matthew's Gospel, where it leads the wise men to the house where the child is.

Showing the manger empty is an Advent idea. During the four weeks before Christmas, many families set out a nativity scene without the baby and add him only on Christmas Eve. This painting holds that same waiting.
