What is painted

On a grassy slope, sheep lie bunched together in soft pale shapes. Three shepherds stand or sit among them, wrapped in cloaks, one leaning on a crook. The sky is shifting from dusky rose at the horizon to deep blue overhead, and a single bright star has come out above the hills.

The painting has no text. Its muted palette of indigo, lavender and wool white keeps it calm, the kind of Christmas image that stays peaceful rather than festive.

The shepherds of Bethlehem

Luke tells it in chapter 2: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” An angel of the Lord appears, the glory of the Lord shines around them, and they are sore afraid. The angel announces a Savior born in the city of David, and a multitude of the heavenly host joins in praise.

The shepherds go to Bethlehem with haste and find Mary, Joseph and the baby lying in a manger. Afterward they return “glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen.” They were ordinary working men, often looked down on, and they were the first to hear the news.

The star belongs to another Gospel: in Matthew it guides the wise men. Nativity scenes have joined the two accounts for centuries, and this painting does the same, showing the watchers on the hill in the hour before everything changes.
