What is painted

The stable is open on one side, so we see both the inside and the night beyond. Inside, a lamp throws a warm glow over the straw, and Mary and Joseph kneel at either side of the manger where the child lies. Outside, the sky is deep blue and full of stars, and on the hill a small village sleeps with not a window lit.

The painting has the richness of an oil painting, in warm browns inside and night blues outside, the two halves meeting at the edge of the stable. Rather than a Bible verse, it carries the opening words of the carol, Silent night, holy night.

The night in Bethlehem, and the carol

Luke tells the story simply. Mary and Joseph traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be registered, and while they were there she gave birth to her firstborn son, “and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7). That night, only a few shepherds in the fields were told.

The carol that gives this painting its name was written in Austria. The priest Joseph Mohr wrote the words, and Franz Xaver Gruber set them to music, and it was first sung on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the village church of Oberndorf. The English version most people know was translated in the nineteenth century by John Freeman Young. It is now sung in hundreds of languages.

The painting takes the carol at its word. The village does not know what has happened; the only light is in the stable.
