About this print
Star Over Bethlehem
A whole town asleep on its hill, and one beam of starlight falling on a small stable in the valley below.
What is painted
The view opens from a rocky path among olive trees and dry grass. On the left, the stone houses of Bethlehem climb a hillside, with a dome, a bell tower and arched doorways lit from within. Tall cypresses stand between the roofs. To the right, the land falls away into a long valley of farms and scattered lights.
High in a blue night sky full of small stars and drifting clouds, one star outshines all the rest. A column of golden light falls from it straight down to a little stable glowing alone in the fields. The eye travels from the path, past the town, and lands on that one humble roof.
The scene is painted in a loose oil style with heavy strokes and fills the print from edge to edge. No words or verses appear on the image.
The little town of Bethlehem
Bethlehem lies a few miles south of Jerusalem in the hills of Judea. It was the hometown of David, and centuries before Jesus, the prophet Micah spoke of it: “But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah” (Micah 5:2), saying that a ruler of Israel would come out of it.
Matthew 2 tells how wise men from the east followed a star to Jerusalem and then on to Bethlehem. The star “went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was” (Matthew 2:9). The painting takes that line almost literally: the light does not land on the palace or the tower, but on a stable at the edge of town.
Where to hang it
Because there are no figures, this landscape fits rooms where a full Nativity might feel too busy: a hallway, a staircase, a home office or a dining room. It reads as Christmas decor in December yet stays at home on the wall well into winter. Families who sing O Little Town of Bethlehem every year will recognize the scene at once.
It is a good Christmas gift for a pilgrim who has visited the Holy Land, a choir member, or a friend who prefers a calm landscape to a crowded scene.
We print it as a giclée on heavy archival matte paper. Each copy is made to order in the US and ships free anywhere in the United States. It arrives unframed. Choose a size from 5x7 to 24x36 inches, or a metric or A size, or order a digital file instead.
