What is painted

In the center, a newborn sleeps on straw in a simple wooden crib, wrapped in white cloth. Mary kneels on one side in a blue mantle, hands folded, head bowed toward him. Joseph kneels on the other side, older, bearded, one hand resting near the edge of the manger as if to steady it.

The watercolor is tender and restrained: blue, brown and ivory, a little gold around the child. There is no lettering, so the painting reads as a quiet devotional image rather than a greeting card.

The first night in Bethlehem

Luke's Gospel tells how Joseph went up from Nazareth to Bethlehem with Mary, who was expecting a child, to be taxed in the city of David. While they were there, she gave birth to her firstborn son, wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger.

Matthew adds Joseph's side of the story. Told by an angel in a dream not to fear taking Mary as his wife, he obeys and names the child Jesus. Joseph says nothing in any Gospel, yet he acts: he travels, protects, flees to Egypt, returns.

Of Mary after the shepherds' visit, Luke writes that she “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). The painting catches that pondering, the two of them simply looking at the child.
